Grading Policy - Iowa School of Beauty

Students in all courses receive grades in work performed in theory tests and practical application. Written tests are scored based on the percentage of correct responses on a scale from 0 to 100%. All tests must be passed with a minimum of 75%. Iowa School of Beauty has developed a rubric system for grading of our practical assessments. A rubric system ensures an objective form of grading by having a series of yes/no questions to determine a grade. Below is an example of a portion of an assessment:

Example

Was the entire face cleansed properly?
Yes No

Was the proper massage procedure followed?
Yes No

Was toner or astringent applied to the entire face, followed by the appropriate moisturizer?
Yes No

Was foundation applied over the entire face, and set with translucent powder?
Yes No

Was eyeshadow applied uniformly to both eyes?
Yes No

To pass a practical assessment, you must receive a score of at least 75%. A score of 74% or less requires a student to retake the assessment. In the above example, the score is calculated by totaling the number of questions circled “yes” and dividing by the total number of questions and taking that answer times 100 to find the percentage (4/5=.8 x100= 80%).
